Early Hokkiens in Singaporeans worked in shipping and trading by water.
Many had been in the marine trade before migrating to Singapore. They settled around the Singapore River and engaged in trade and business. Many other Hokkiens chose to take up construction and finance.
Hokkiens also continues the tradition of running provision stores. They sell various goods, from household products to canned and dry food.
