There are many dialects spoken in the Fujian province. What we call Hokkien in Singapore is one of the dialects of the southern Fujian (Min Nan).
Hokkien make up 40% of the Chinese community in Singapore
In the 19th century, the primary instruction language in schools was Hokkien. However, in the early 20th century, Mandarin gradually replaced Hokkien as the language used for teaching and learning.

The Chinese School system was gradually abolished. All schools adopted English as the main instruction language, establishing its role as the primary language in Singapore.
